Exploring the Use of Writing in a Mathematics Classroom

UPHSI Math Instructor presents paper at ASET Conference in Changhua, Taiwan

Miss Early Sol A. Gadong, Mathematics Instructor of UP High School in Iloilo, presented her paper entitled “Exploring the Nature of Student Learning and Affects in High School Algebra through Writing Exercises” in the 29th Association of Science Education Taiwan (ASET) Annual International Conference 2013 at the National Changhua University of Education in Changhua, Taiwan on December 12 to 14, 2013.

Gadong presented the findings of her research on how writing may be employed as a means to understanding the nature of students’ learning of selected mathematical concepts and processes in High School Algebra, and the affects associated with them. 

Her paper used student responses to predetermined writing prompts to show that writing exercises are able to provide information on the type and level of students’ conceptual and procedural learning and the dimensions of affects (e.g., Enjoyment, Value, Beliefs, and Motivation) expressed by the students. 

Her paper contends that “writing exercises may enable teachers to identify faulty reasoning in mathematics that may consequently lead to effective and specific interventions.” She adds that writing activities may complement traditional forms of assessment in providing evidence of the extent of student learning.

Gadong also attended keynote speeches and parallel sessions focused on the conference theme, “Science and Mathematics Manpower Cultivation: Key Literacies for the 21st Century.” ###
